Oil
Originals: Hyrum
Joe
Celebrating his mixed heritage,
Hyrum Joe often depicts images from various cultures including
Plains, Pueblo, and Navajo. A young girl of possibly twelve watches
intently as a dance processional takes place before her. Her
mother, grandmother, or even older sisters are likely setting
the example, after having helped her with her own adornment.
She stands close to the willows to offer some relief from the
heat. Eagle feather tufts are tied to a porcupine-quilled medicine
wheel in her hair. Calico trade cloth is draped around her neck,
while a beaded bone necklace hangs down the front of her elk
tooth dress.
If you listen closely,
you can hear their songs of thanksgiving and beauty.

Although Hyrum might be
recognized as the son of the internationally known alabaster
sculptor and bronze artist, Oreland Joe, he has certainly proved
that he can stand on his own two feet. Hyrum creates some of
the most visually compelling and original works of art in oil
that we've seen by anyone his age. He has won the SWAIA fellowship,
as well as many other awards, including best of class at major
art shows such as the Heard Museum Indian Market.
We are delighted to have
this opportunity to show Hyrum's work, which can be seen in only
a handful of the most prestigious galleries in Colorado and New
Mexico. Because of our close, personal relationship, we were
lucky enough to acquire these recent originals, and we look forward
to bringing you more.
